The antique and art district shops

Address: Ostermalm

Swedish officers and men brought home thousands of carriage-loads of war loot from central Europe in the 17th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries rococo, Louis XVI and Empire style furniture was the latest craze among aristocrats. The two latter were translated into the much admired Gustavian style in Sweden.

Their descendants have taken good care of the family heirlooms since then and Stockholm has not been conquered by a foreign army since 1520, so very little has been destroyed.

All this has created a huge supply of antiques and an auction market for fine art and antiques that is totally disproportionate to Sweden's size. A quick look in the online catalogues from the major auction houses - Auktionsverket and Bukowskis - will tell you what is being traded and why dealers and collectors from all over the world flock to their big international auctions in May/June and November/December.

With such an enormous supply and a lively market, there are antique dealers in proportion. You will find a selection below.

And there are trade fairs of course. The biggest one is the annual Antiques Fair at the Stockholm Trade Fair in February each year with 150 exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors. The ultra elegant Grand Antiques is held every even year in Mid-November.

Auction houses:

Auktionsverket Nybrogatan 32, 114 39 Stockholm, Phone: +46 (0)8 453 67 50, www.auktionsverket.se is the world's oldest auction house - established in 1674. They have auctions more than 75 days per year, trading 60.000 objects from world class fine art to second hand stuff. Internation Auctions twice a year, so called city auctions every second week with illustrated on-line catalogues. Info on their site.

Bukowskis Arsenalsgatan 5, 111 47 Stockholm, Phone: +46 (0)8 614 08 00, www.bukowskis.se is the market leader in fine arts and antiques. This is where you turn heirlooms into cash when your manor needs a new roof and your bank account has dried up. Their subsidiary Auktionskompaniet at Regeringsgatan 47 (next to NK) takes care of the lesser objects.
